Ceramics

2020 - 2022

In my current ceramic works I rely on transparent glazes to suspend underlying surface marks or decoration in order to evoke a transient moment just below the surface. The scales and bubbling surfaces offer a tactile experience with both the functional and sculptural work as well. These works pull from recent explorations with physical transparencies and photographs including performances with overhead projections and transparent books that I have made.

Inspired by the imaginative world building of science fiction, each ceramic has its own mythos. For many, I have edited the image of the sculpture onto a photograph from my own archive where I imagine the sculpture’s narrative to be taking place. I have extensively documented Arabia Mountain, a large granite outcrop, home to highly specialized plants adapted to cope with the desert-like microenvironment there.
